Coraline (2002) by Neil Gaiman

Coraline is a ghost story that is given the Gaiman treatment. Suitable for children and adults alike, it is a dark fairy tale that feels equal parts twisted and sweet. Coraline is a young girl who moves to a new house with her parents. As they are busy and unable to attend to her, she goes exploring and discovers dark secrets. The adventure that follows will have you smiling at the imagination of it all, while also shifting uncomfortably at the horrors Gaiman drums up. An excellent modern fairy tale/ ghost story, I would love to read this to kids someday.
